Traditionally, the busiest time on the golf equipment calendar is January and February because that is when the new PGA Tour season used to start (and will again in 2024), and they like to have new gear to talk about at the PGA Merchandise Show, which is held at the end of January. But over the last few years, more and more brands have opted to release some gear in the middle of summer to create buzz and ensure that something special has a chance to capture some attention instead of getting mixed in with all the other new releases.
This summer, while your air conditioner was working hard and you were busy playing, several brands released exciting gear. To be sure you’re in the know, we have put together this list of late-season releases, and be sure to follow our equipment guru, David Dusek, on Twitter and Instagram, to keep up with the fall’s new gear happenings too.

Callaway JAWS Raw wedges (David Dusek/Golfweek)
Gear: Callaway JAWS Raw wedges Price: $179.99 each with True Temper Dynamic Gold Spinner steel shaft and Lamkin UTx Charcoal grip. $189.99 with Project X Catalyst 80 graphite shaft. Specs: Cast stainless steel with tungsten insert. Available in even lofts between 48 and 60 degrees and in four sole-grind configurations.
Who it’s for: Golfers looking for extra spin around the greens and wedges that look like they came straight off a PGA Tour van.

Using a putting stroke, the Ping ChipR pops the ball into the air easily because it has the same loft as a 9-iron. (Ping)
Gear: Ping ChipR wedge Price: $179.99 with a Ping Z-Z115 steel shaft and 360 Dyla-wedge Lite grip or $210 with a Ping Alta CB Slate graphite shaft. Specs: Cast stainless steel with tungsten heel and toe weights. 35″ long with 38.5 degrees of loft.
Who it’s For: Golfers who struggle to hit chip shots consistently.
The Skinny: While many golfers often hit chips fat or thin, most golfers make solid contact when they putt, so Ping designed the ChipR to be swung like a putter. Putters typically have just 3 or 4 degrees of loft, but the 9-iron loft of the ChipR lifts the ball into the air, helping shots fly over rough and the green’s collar. Full Review …
