Ciamillo is back with World's Lightest carbon crankset at 279g?! - Bikerumor

It would be easy to look at the weight of the Gravitas Gen 13 cranksets and think, “that’s probably the weight for one of the arms.” But no. That fairly unbelievable claim of 279g includes both arms, spider, spindle, and the hardware. That should make it the lightest crankset out there – which was Ted Ciamillo’s goal from the outset.

As Ted would tell it though, he didn’t really want to get back into producing cranksets. But thanks to a number of customers begging for a new run, he decided to take aim at the ‘world’s lightest’ title in the process.

Built around hollow carbon fiber crank arms with an internal honeycomb structure for strength, the crankset uses a removable carbon spindle with alloy bearing faces.

This spindle construction allows the spindle to be customized during construction to fit different bottom bracket standards and chain lines (43.5 and 44.5mm). The crankset will be available to fit SRAM DUB and all 30mm spindle configurations–though there’s no 24mm spindle option.

The chainring spider will be fully carbon and integrated into the crank arm. This spider is 2x specific, though Ciamillo may have a 1x compatible version by late spring. The crankset does not include chainrings, so you’ll have to provide your own compact 110 BCD chainrings – though Ciamillo recommends Praxis Buzz rings.

How much is the ‘world’s lightest crankset’? You may want to sit down. Even before adding chainrings and a bottom bracket, the Gravitas Gen 13 crankset will set you back $1,888. That price includes the arms, spider, spindle, and hardware. As mentioned, you’ll have to provide your own bottom bracket and chainrings.

Offered in 170mm or 172.5mm arms only, the cranks have a 110kg weight limit and will begin shipping on March 23. Stay tuned for an actual review soon!

Not even a real picture…

With production numbers this low, the first pictures will be 2 days before the first customer receives it.

‘As Ted would tell it though, he didn’t really want to get back into producing cranksets.’

Seriously? Is anyone still willing to give this man money? You know the old saying ‘a fool and his money are soon parted’? Don’t care how innovative the product is, given his history, how does one even consider airing product announcements from someone who has on multiple occasions defrauded so many people over the past 10-12 years?

You say he will begin shipping on March 23 – only two weeks from this announcement – yet all he can provide is a computer image. Not a good sign, I would say.

Side note: Ciamillo also makes brakes engineered for use on Bromptons. Weird.

Ted’s always been a madman. But he cranks are shipping March 23rd and they’re still just showing renders? Sounds, uh… optimistic. And at that claimed weight and price I’d want to see some instrumented testing

I bought the NFT of the rendering and it’s more real than any of the cranksets people think they’re ordering.

Terrible biz, ripped many bike shops off. Buyer beware, he’s got a crap rep for a reason, do not believe anything these guys say.

Bought Lekki8 brakes in 2020, only to find they were machined outside margin of safety. All lower calliper arms cracked and despite repeated attempts to get customer service, never got response. Based on this experience, any drive for lightest cranks by this company make me think twice about safety of product.

BR didn’t deem it necessary to perhaps mention in passing the history of the man behind the company?

BR is about bike rumors and new or upcoming products, not investigative journalism. Moreover, not everyone has had a bad experience with Ciamillo. Opinions are not facts, and what’s read online in forums or FB groups are not necessarily facts. So why then would BR then want to repeat what might not necessarily be fact and thus risk libel or just look bad in the process?

Other bicycle related news sources can mention major reputation issues, so can Bikerumor. Frankly, it’s irresponsible of them to NOT mention it. It wouldn’t take more than 30 minutes and a few emails to have 100% proof of Camillo’s shenanigans.
